Case Study Houses by Detmold School of Architecture and Interior Architecture
The case study house is a classic example of modernist design. It is an architectural landmark, constructed on a monumental platform. The case study houses are a great starting point for exploring issues about living and balancing efficiency with quality. In this book, Marco Hemmerling documents a valuable didactic approach in the Digital Design course at the Detmold School of Architecture and Interior Architecture. In the book, the students were tasked with modeling the houses in 3D using Vectorworks design software.
The case study houses were sponsored by Arts & Architecture Magazine from 1945 to 1966. The houses, which were designed to solve the housing crisis after the World War II, embraced modernist architecture and advanced contemporary technology. Their distinctive shapes and materials were shaped by a focus on structural design and materials. Originally designed by different architects for different clients, these homes were all united by an open plan, simple volumes, large windows, and steel frames.
The Stahl House
The Stahl House is a historic landmark in Los Angeles. It was officially designated as a landmark by the city in 1999. The American Institute of Architects listed the house as one of the top 150 structures in the country in 2007, and it was one of only 11 structures in Southern California that made the list. In 2008, the Stahl House was named one of the top 10 houses in Los Angeles by the Los Angeles Times, and in 2013 it was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
In order to create this 3-D model, the author has used a book, Case Study Houses, to teach architecture students about the process. In addition to presenting an exemplary architectural design, the book also provides historical background information and personal photographs. It also explores the planning process of BIM with Vectorworks. The 3D-model’s Building components are linked to IFC-Data that provides information about the building materials, quantities, and energy consumption. This information can be used for cost estimation.
Pierre Koenig’s design
A modernist masterpiece, Pierre Koenig’s design for Stahl House, was created in the 1960s. Located on a vertiginous hillside in Hollywood Hills, Los Angeles, the Stahl House was designed to be both beautiful and sustainable. Koenig believed in the importance of sustainable building practices, and his house was oriented on a north-south axis, which provides natural ventilation.
Its original architect, C.H. “Buck” Stahl, worked for several years on the project. He built a three-dimensional model of the house in 1956, and interviewed Koenig for his design in 1957. His design was chosen for inclusion in the Case Study House program of Arts & Architecture magazine, on April 8, 1959, and was assigned the number 22.
